Polishing is the pinnacle of car detailing – and the biggest challenge in mobile work. Traditional polishes create dust, stain plastics, and require controlled workshop conditions. What is paint polishing – and what does it actually do?

Polishing is not cleaning. It's a controlled abrasion process: a polish contains fine abrasive particles that remove microscopically thin layers of clear coat. This doesn't hide scratches, swirl marks and oxidation – it physically removes them.

The result is a visually deeper, more uniform clear coat. Light reflects more evenly, colour looks richer, gloss is more intense – without a single drop of paint being applied.

Important: polishing only makes sense when there's enough clear coat remaining. A good detailer measures paint thickness before polishing – and only then decides which level of correction is appropriate.

Typical paint defects: what can be polished out?

Swirl marks – fine circular scratches from incorrect washing or automatic car washes. Visible as a spiderweb pattern in direct sunlight.
Scratches – surface scratches in the clear coat. If your fingernail doesn't catch, they can be polished out.
Oxidation – dull, faded paint from UV exposure. Common on older vehicles or those parked outdoors long-term.
Water spots – etched mineral deposits from rain or sprinklers. Often deeper than they appear.
Holograms – buffer trails left by incorrectly applied polish or low-quality car washes.

What polishing cannot fix: deep scratches through to the base coat, dents, or stone chips that have fully penetrated the clear coat. These require repainting.

The challenge of mobile polishing

Traditional polishes have a fundamental problem for mobile detailing: they create dust. Fine abrasive particles become airborne and settle on plastics, rubber seals and glass – and are difficult to remove. In a workshop, this can be controlled. In the open air, on a private parking space or in an underground car park, it's a serious problem.

The second problem: before polishing, the paint must be meticulously clean and free of contamination. Traditional washing requires water – often in quantities that simply aren't available on location. The Optimum system solves both problems completely.

The Optimum system: three products, one principle

Optimum Polymer Technologies was founded by Dr. David Ghodoussi – a PhD in polymer and organic chemistry. The products are developed at a chemical level, not through trial and error. The result is a coherent system where each product is matched to the next.

Step 1 – Preparation: Optimum No Rinse (ONR) – complete car wash with no water connection. Just 30ml in 8 litres of water.
Step 2 – Paint correction: Optimum Hyper Polish – sprayable polish, zero dust, no staining of plastics. Paint correction and gloss enhancement in one step.
Step 3 – Protection: Optimum Car Wax New Ceramic – Carnauba + polymers + SiO2 + patented UV protection (UVA & UVB). Up to 6 months protection.

Optimum No Rinse: preparation without a water connection

Optimum No Rinse (ONR) has been on the market since 2005 and is the pioneer of rinseless washing. The current Version 6 is the most capable formula yet. Substantive polymers bond to the paint during washing, creating a protective layer that prevents dirt particles from scratching the clear coat.

In practice: one bucket of water, 30ml of ONR, a microfibre cloth – and the paint is clean, safe, and ready for polishing. No hose, no drain, no water connection needed. For mobile detailing, ONR is not a compromise – it's the more precise method.

Optimum Hyper Polish: dust-free paint correction in a spray

Optimum Hyper Polish is a sprayable polish with medium cut and a finishing result: swirls, oxidation and fine scratches are removed while the paint is simultaneously finished to a high gloss. The decisive advantage for mobile work: Hyper Polish produces zero dust – the work stays clean, the surroundings unaffected. No masking tape needed on plastics.

Optimum Car Wax New Ceramic: protection with a UV patent

After polishing, the paint is open and unprotected – this moment is ideal for sealing. Optimum Car Wax New Ceramic combines three protection principles in one:

Carnauba wax – warm, deep gloss and a natural protective barrier
Sealant polymers – long-term bonding to the paint system, durability of a synthetic sealant
SiO2 ceramic – hydrophobic effect and chemical resistance
Patented UV inhibitors – active UVA & UVB absorption, two US patents (#6,685,765 / #6,669,763)
Duration of protection – up to 6 months (New Ceramic formula)
No VOCs or harsh chemicals – environmentally friendly

UV intensity in Switzerland – particularly at higher altitudes – is significantly stronger than in lowland Europe. Paint sealed without active UV protection ages noticeably faster in the Zürich area than in other parts of Europe.

Classic & vintage cars: why this protection matters most

Classic vehicles from the 1960s through the 1990s place special demands on paint protection. Many still have original single-stage paint – paint without a modern clear coat layer. This is significantly more UV-sensitive than today's paint systems: without active UV protection, it fades visibly faster, becoming dull and brittle – a loss of value that cannot easily be reversed.

Standard carnauba wax forms a natural protective barrier – similar to the way the palm tree it comes from protects its leaves from the Brazilian tropical sun. However, this physical barrier alone does not provide sufficient UV absorption. The real UV protection in Optimum Car Wax New Ceramic comes from patented synthetic UV inhibitors that actively absorb both UVA and UVB radiation. This combination of natural carnauba and patented UV inhibitors is something most standard carnauba waxes on the market do not offer.

For classic cars, this means in practice:
